Few key characteristics of an audio amplifier that define its quality are, output power, gain, signal-to-noise ratio, distortion, impedance, and frequency response. An audio amplifier as the name describes is a device that amplifies the audio signal received from any input source such as a radio receiver or any electronic instrument to produce a strengthened signal at the output to drive a loudspeaker or headphone. Here we will discuss the working and designing of the audio amplifier with an output power of 7 watts which means the maximum load the circuit can drive is 7 watts. They can be classified according to their functioning as DC (direct current) amplifiers, audio frequency amplifiers, radio frequency amplifiers, and UHF, VHF, or SHF amplifiers. Amplifiers are generally used in communication systems that comprise analog signals. The signal may be voltage, power, or current. black for ground, red for power, different colors for audio in and audio out lines.Īmplifier IC needs supply voltage to be in 8V to 18V range. The amplifier is an electronic device that magnifies the strength of the input signal by transmitting the energy to an incoming input by means of any power source at a controlled level. We used two speakers: one low-mid range and one high frequency (tweeter) connected through a crossover capacitor.Ĭolor wires to connect the board to external connectors, potentiometer, and speakers (Note: this is a 100 pieces bag of contacts, only 2 are needed for this project) Two other leads of both resistors are connected together and then connected to the volume control potentiometer. One lead of each resistor is connected to the input on the audio jack (one resistor to the left channel, another one to the right channel). The stereo signal is converted to mono signals using a couple of 1 kohm resistors soldered on the audio jack. The speaker has a stereo input, so that a device with stereo output (like an iPod) can be connected to it. We glued it with wood glue, and sealed the seams using a hot glue. The speaker box is built from 1/4" (6 mm) MDF, 4 wooden planks and some wood screws. We reused drivers (speakers) from an old non-powered computer speaker, that Mike got for free at the local surplus store (they give kids a bucket and there are a few shelves that kids can dig for free stuff).
